As we watch governments shift, principles crumble, and systems prove unstable, the conscious Christian must ask: Where do I begin to ensure my house is in order? The answer is simple but profound, start with God and then master the essentials of life that sustain you and your family.
A Scriptural Foundation
The Bible reminds us:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
“The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” (Proverbs 21:20)
“Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.” (Proverbs 3:9)
Our order begins not with chaos or reaction, but with priority and discipline, God first, and then the needs that sustain daily life.
Maslow’s Theory and the Christian Priority Zone
Psychologist Abraham Maslow taught that basic needs must be met before higher aspirations can flourish. As Christians, we recognize this same principle. Before we can grow spiritually, give generously, or build communities, we must master the first zone of life’s essentials.
Priority Zone One: Master the Basics
Tithe – Returning to God what belongs to Him is foundational. It keeps our hearts aligned and our priorities centered.
Rent/Mortgage – Shelter is a God-given necessity. Keep your home in order and protect the roof over your family’s head.
Food – Provide nourishment for yourself and those you love. God gave us bodies to be cared for as His temple.
Transportation – Maintain the means to work, worship, and serve.
Utilities – Ensure the lights, water, and essentials are covered for stability.
“Let all things be done decently and in order.” (1 Corinthians 14:40)
Practical Guidance
Automate your Priority Zone: Wherever possible, schedule these essentials to be paid automatically, even by credit card if necessary. This reduces stress and eliminates oversight.
Build a Reserve: Strive to have 3–6 months of supply stored away for these basics plus $1000 in savings. This is wisdom, not fear, provision for the unexpected. Joseph stored grain in Egypt during years of plenty so that the people would survive the famine (Genesis 41:47–49).
Moving Forward
Once you have mastered this first zone, God, tithe, and essential needs, you are free to focus on higher callings: investments, generosity, ministry, and service. You cannot build a kingdom on shaky ground, but with your foundation secured, you can grow in abundance and purpose.
