One of the most beloved hymns of the church begins with a simple but profound declaration: “I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, and it told Thy love to me.” These words echo the cry of every believer’s heart, to belong fully to God and to be drawn ever closer into His presence.
At Jonahville A.M.E. Zion Church, this hymn is more than a song, it is a prayer, a covenant, and a reminder of our calling. In seasons of joy and seasons of struggle, we are reminded that our true strength comes not from the world, but from drawing nearer to the Lord.
The Call to Nearness
The psalmist reminds us: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). Nearness is not about geography but about intimacy. It is the posture of the heart that longs to be in fellowship with God through prayer, worship, and obedience.
When we gather at Jonahville, whether in Sunday worship, Bible study, or ministry work, we are not merely coming together as a body—we are leaning closer to God as His children. The altar of Jonahville has become a sacred place where burdens are lifted, where forgiveness flows, and where the Spirit draws us nearer.
A Zion Call
As members of the A.M.E. Zion tradition, our heritage is rooted in liberation, empowerment, and holiness. The hymn’s refrain—“Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where Thou hast died”—reminds us of the sacrifice that made us free. At Jonahville, we honor that legacy by living lives of service, advocacy, and discipleship, carrying the message of Christ into the world.
The Significance for Us Today
To sing “I am Thine, O Lord” at Jonahville is to reaffirm our commitment:
To walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8).
To bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2).
To remain steadfast in faith and love, even when the enemy tries to distract or divide.
Every ministry, every prayer meeting, every act of kindness is a way of saying: “Lord, we are Yours. Draw us nearer.”
Closing Reflection
In a world that constantly pulls us in many directions, Jonahville stands as a place where we can come together and declare with one voice, “I am Thine, O Lord.” It is here that we find strength, unity, and the blessed assurance that God is drawing us closer each day.
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith” (Hebrews 10:22).
May our song not only be sung with our lips but lived with our lives.
With love and faith,
Jonahville A.M.E. Zion Church Family
